Musicians about Sawubona

"Music is all about collaboration. You can't play alone!"
- Hugh Masekela

"One of the reasons I decided to add my interpretations to the Sawubona project for South Africa is because I was able to relate to some of the lyrics (...) and what a pleasure when we as artists are encouraged to simply BE OURSELVES!! This was what sealed the deal for me. Not to be compared or judged or negatively criticized or crucified for being who we are. God has given us gifts and we are supposed to use those gifts and share them with those who are willing and open to listen. We may not like everything we hear, but the main thing is to present the platform and opportunities for the listening experience and learn to respect our similarities and our differences."
(Aziza Miller, August 2009)

"An inspired move to connect the continents through musical collaboration."
Donovan Copley – lead singer of Hot Water

Last Sawubona Song Entry until 10 October 2009

Dear Musicians, during summertime we planed for Sawubona 2010: CD production, concerts - all what you can imagine. As we want to be ready in March/April 2010 with all songs, the deadline for all entries will be 10 October 2009. An independent jury (musicians, people from music business) will listen to the songs and will be also responsible for the selection. We will announce the members of the jury within the next weeks. There is a lot of real good stuff for The Songs Of Good Hope, but… Continue

Stuttgart, 5 July - 3 members of Hugh Masekela's band, Abednigo Sibongiseni (Fana) Zulu (Bass), Lee-Roy Sauls (Drums) and Francis Manneh Fuster (Percussion) team up with the Sawubona Acustic Band, Werner Acker (Guitar), Annette Kienzle (Vocals), Mthunzi Fesi (Vocals), Ekkehard Rössle (Saxophone), Albert Mayer-Mikosch (Acustic Guitar) and Eckhard Stromer (Percussion) for songs "Rainbow Scatterings", "Collecting The Money" and "A Word". The band started the concert with Brian McDonald's "Soweto, June 1994".

The concert was also the opening for Hugh Masekela's great concert in Suttgart which was not sure because Hugh had to visit hospital in the morning - he had an accident with his arm. "If that accident would not happend, I really played with you guys" told us Hugh in a video statement - You will find his statement as well as other statements in videos form the event - they will be ready in the next day. Fana, Lee-Roy and Francis met up in the afternoon of the concert with the Sawubona Acoustics Band at the University Of Suttgart for very first rehearsal. Werner said: It's magic how they find their ways into the songs from the begining. For us it was a great rehearsal and concert with such outstanding musicians". Fana was already member of the old SAWUBONA band 1998/1999 and he said "it is absolutly great to relaunch the project on an Internet platform". Siyabonga, Fana, Francis and Lee-Roy for the magic collaboration, siyabonga Hugh and all members of his band for the great concert in Suttgart! "All about Hugh Masekela"

Sawubona Playlist "Various"

As announced last week here is the second Sawubona Playlist "Various" containing the songs not using the "Songs of Good Hope" lyrics.

Because of the possibility to upload everything you want to the music player on your profile page it's not easy to figure out which songs you want to contribute to the Sawubona Music Jam and which songs you just want to allocate to the other community members.

So please be indulgently with the list and tell me if there is a song missing or if there is a song

A shaking experience (Wednesday, 14. October 2009)

Today we've been in the field. This means we have been out in the rural area. This means we have been there were the people live from whatever they can get into their stomach. Some of them have some plants in a community garden: potatoes, lettuce, spinach, carrots, onions, peaches. But really it's very few plants for a whole group of people. They work hard for what we would call a very little garden.

Yes, it is, but if they have too much of it, it will undergo inflation inside their head - unless you have people like artists or journalists that bring sight and sound to us of the world without freedom that is not seen.
