Shyam Sundar Goswami at the age of 10, he was first exposed to music by his mother Srimati Maya Goswami. After years of serious studies (Sadhana) at the feet of several Gurus, including Pandit Jadunath Chakraborty and Guru Madan Mohan Thakur, he emerges now as a new outstanding voice, "a jewel", as the late artist Prabhas Sen of Santiniketan used to say about him.
Shyam Sundar Goswami is trained in the tradition of Kirana Ghrana. He studied Indian classical music at Rabindra Bharati University in Calcutta (Kolkata), from where he got a Honors degree in Hindustani classical music and then specialized in Khayal, the most appreciated and the most elegant form of Indian classical music. It is the style of the great vocal maestros who can use all the subtleties of the technique" (Alain Daniélou: The Music of North India, 1968). Shyam Sundar Goswami successfully obtained the M.A. degree in Khayal, his specialty. He is a master of Kyhal, Thumris and Bahjaans.
He has become an excellent teacher himself and has educated children, especially those who struggle to study in spite of financial difficulties. He has taught the children at the Study House and Training Center of the Noviciate of Barasat for three years as well as those at Ashalayam in Kolkata who are street children and at Rainbow School in Loreto Sealdah. In addition, he gives private tuitions.
In April 2006, his debut CD Peace and Harmony was finally released and, in May, he embarked on a successful European tour, including France and Switzerland (Paris, Rennes, Dinard, Lyon, Lugano, Ascona), where he performed especially in churches & historical palaces . On the tour, he was accompanied by Pandit Sanjay Mukherjee on the tabla and Shabbir Hussain on the sarengi.
In 2000, Syham Sundar Goswami sang at the "Biswa Bango Samelan" Festival at Rabindra Sadan, Calcutta.
Among his many public performances in and around Calcutta were memorable ones organized in the historical Rajbari palaces of North Calcutta in 2003 and 2004: At Natmandir in November 2003, at Madan Mahan Thakurabri in March 2004, at Chattubabu Latubabu Rajbar in September 2004 and at the historical Sree Sree Krishna Jew of Shovabazar in December 2004, to name just a few. ...just had to think of your music some days ago. Been to a conference in our Frankfurt's Paulskirche (in fact on event where Philo Ikonya held laudatio speech for her old Kenyan friend and freedom fighting colleage Njeri Kabeberi when receiving the Humanity Award) - while the topic of the conference was "Encounter of Religions - Religions and Law".
The citations of religious texts where emphasised by culturally adherent music - in case of Bhagavad Gita 3.15-20 it had been an improvisation on a midnight Raga (Indian and German musician playing together) - that's when I thought of the words you told me about Indian classical music - and our question if it was feasible to mix Raga with European instrumentation.
All the best for your performance and thanks for the invitation (as always, I somehow doubt a taxi driver would bring me there from here....) ;-)
I love listening to Indian music, the Pakistani Nusrat Ali Fateh Khan, Ladu Mangeshkar, are some of the names that I'm familiar with, but I know that there are so many. now I can add Goswami. Indian cultures are very interesting for me, Joy Goswami is one of my favourite poets.
I am in gratitude for having the opportunity to listen to your beautiful voice and music. Clearly, you are living in mastery and in joy with your life-work. May you be well and continue to share your "gift" to global cultures. As I reflect, I remember the 8 yrs I lived and worked in Malaysia in the early 90s. It was in Kuala Lumpur that I first learned my appreciation for diverse cultures, languages, history, and music from India. Keep playing your music live --whenever you can. I welcome you to join my page as a friend.
Yes, it is,
but if they have too much of it, it will undergo inflation inside their head - unless you have people like artists or journalists that bring sight and sound to us of the world without freedom that is not seen.
