"A Word" was written after a South Africa conference 1996 at the Protestant Church Academy Bad Boll (near Stuttgart). To this conference were invited the future members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission like Dr. Alex Boraine (Deputy Chairman) and South Africa's Minister of Justice in that time, Dr. Dullah Omar. All South African guests came to Germany to listen how Germany dealt with the past - the Nazi time and also the GDR past.
I was in a working group with Dr. Dullah Omar and asked him about his impressions/opinions about how he think Germany dealt with the past and what he thinks how South Africa can handle it. He said: "I will explain tomarrow with my speach". A day later South Africa's Minister Of Justice explained the concept of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and amnesty. The reactions from the German part of the conference was "this is not justice". Dullah Omar said: "We don't have in Zulu a word for justice - we have a simillar word - ubuntu - but ubuntu means make peace".
