Over time, I have come to realise the sobering truth of the old adage that the more things change they more they remain the same. This holds very true especially in relation to our dear country , Kenya. We were all subjected to autocratic rule under Moi.The worst political assasinations occured under his watch and supervision. The country's resources were plundered with wanton abandon, state coffers were looted by the mighty few. We all know what happened and I do not want to go on listing all the evils,I will spare you the details. But there is something else I want to tell you.
Kenyans under 'Moism' were oppressed but they were still men and women. The guns and bullets temporarily put fear in them but they did not kill their spirit. The sons and daughters of Kenya realised that the guns and bullets could not take away the truth and they could not give them the truth. They arose and fought in the name of democracy,in the name of the constitution, in the name of Ford Kenya, in the name of D.P.......They had a strong conviction that the victory was theirs. They were simply unstoppable.
Kenyans refused to surrender their minds to the barrage of lies which were being hurled out by Moi in the name of Kenya and KANU.They did not surrender their morals and self-respect to the infamies which were beind carried out by Moi and his stooges. It soon dawned on them that Moi was not worth the chair he was sitting on at state house. He was totally unprincipled and wholly unaware that even ruling by decrees needed principles. He had plunged Kenya into confusion.Kenyans decided that Moi could no longer monkey about with their constitutional rights. And so the only song they knew was ......
''Away with the stooges of Moism, down with Moi and his lackeys, down with the clique of police and army adventurers, long live kenya, long live the kenyan srtuggle!!''
The song was sung by all Kenyans regardless of their race and social status. We had the choir masters in every province, singing the same song albeit in their own language but the tune was the same, the rythm the same. The question was ;who are our Kenyan leaders if they are not to found in the oppositon movement? And so the opposition leaders had a place of honour in the minds of Kenyans as the true leaders. They were banded tribalists, enemies , saboteurs,self-seekers or similar names but this did not subtract from the real essesnce of that worth.Their concern with our plight as Kenyans made them gain the natural support of the Kenyans. We may have disagreed with some of the things they spoke and did but knew they spoke the language of the people.Soon Moi was out !! We celebrated, but it was for a short period.
But what did they get? Someone inherited the position of a president (despot?) without having the character of a president! We were soon asking ourselves, did we see the opposition and the change they promised through rose -coloured spectacles? We discovered we only had a change of face(s),no attempt has been made at re-organising the whole economic pattern and economic policies within Kenya. We tried fixing our problems by common sense,by pedestrian wisdom when we knew that only constitutional changes can accomodate our diversity. We still have instituions that are an intergral part of the cover -up game.Institutions that are inept and corrupt.
The diversity that is Kenya is not reflected in the way we handle our public affairs. They undermined the constitutive powers of the people. Institutions that implemented policies , if they can be called so,policies of desperation which have in no way improved the state of affairs .The volcanoe errupted. We agreed impunity was the sole cause of all these. We saw the need and agreed to review our governance structures through constitutional changes. We saw the urgent need to shake all institutions, long term solutions by getting to the truth of all historical injustices.Right now we have calm, yes calm,we are all laughing but it is a gurded laughter.
Kenyans have discovered that our leaders are hiding the truth by pulling a veil over their faces through falsehood lies and intimidation backed by corruption money, and guns and bullets.Woe unto them , Kenyans have discovered this treachery in its true perspective and raw form.Their mass strength is invincible . We have realised that they stand not for the freedom of the people but for the adoption of more subtle systems of oppression and exploitation. Kenyans still remember what Mboya said:
''Any political system must be flexible if it is to surviveand be of benefit to society........systems are established to serve the society, they are not totem poles to be worshipped''
